
Edward Lind Morse, painter of landscapes and portraits, was born on March 29, 1857 in Poughkeepsie, New York, son of artist/inventor Samuel F. B. Morse and Sarah Elizabeth (Griswold) Morse. The artist likely received his initial training in the arts from his father, Samuel.
Edward Morse earned a BA at Yale University in 1878 and later studied at Berlin’s Royal Academy of Art (1884 – 88); the Grand Ducal Academy of Art in Weimar, Germany (1888 -91); and the Académie Julian in Paris (1891-92). While in Europe, he studied with artists Paul Thumann, Karl Gussow, Max Thedy, and William-Adolphe Bouguereau.
He exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1893 and at the National Academy of Design.
