Ernst Ludwig Max Zachmann was a German expressionist painter .

Zachmann studied painting from 1910 to 1912 at the Grand Ducal School of Applied Arts in Karlsruhe and from 1912 to 1914 at the Esslingen School of Applied Arts .

Zachmann was first under the influence of Ferdinand Hodler, from 1912 onwards he turned to Expressionism.

After the outbreak of the First World War he was called to military service and fell as an aviator lieutenant on the Western Front in Flanders.

During the Third Reich, the work of Zachmann was assigned, "degenerate art". In 1937 31 graphics (drawings, woodcuts, watercolors and lithographs) were confiscated from the collections of the Kunsthalle Mannheim. The works in his family's possession were kept in hiding and thus saved.
