Marinus van der Maarel belonged to the second generation of Hague School painters. He studied at Koninklijke Academie van Beeldende Kunsten in The Hague. The impressionist style of Van der Maarel was greatly influenced by his teacher Willem Maris (1844-1910) who taught him to depict the typical hazy light of the Dutch shores.
