Rutgers was a textile merchant by profession, and scholars believe he is one of several notable Dutch draftsmen of this time who were amateur, rather than professional, artists. He is known for his inventive approach to composition, in which he often employs strong diagonal elements. His landscapes, with their command of space and balance, are charming as works of art, but also interesting as documentary snapshots of life in the Netherlands in the 1600s.
