In Rome, Lucas joined the German artist colony of around Joseph Anton Koch and Johann Christian Reinhart. Many excursions together with Friedrich Preller (1830) and Wilhelm Ahlborn (1831) led the artist to Olevano and Civitella.

From the 1830s he turned more and more to the real nature subject to his drawing technique was even more precise, light his palette and colorful.
