Franz Kaisermann was of Swiss origin and like so many contemporary artists was lured by the arts and classical history of Italy. In 1783 he travelled to Rome, where he became the pupil of the great Swiss watercolourist A Ducros. Kaisermann's handling of the watercolour medium has clear similarities with his tutor, which is seen in the choice of colour and the accomplishment of solid and liquid forms through tone.
