Why is this image in the public domain?
This work was commissioned by the United States federal government as part of the Works Progress Administration (WPA) program. It is not subject to copyright protection.

Arnold Wiltz is a German born, American Painter.
Wiltz's work can be related to both Precisionism and Surrealism. Son of a painter, he displayed an early talent for art, but went to sea at age 16 and traveled about the world for the next seven years. In 1914, at the outbreak of WWI, he settled in NYC and enrolled in art classes. Married Eva Madeline Shiff (see entry) in 1922 and in 1923 they settled in Woodstock, NY. In 1928 he worked for a time in France and critics regarded his work in this period as a turning point. His life ended prematurely after a bout with pneumonia.
