Hugo Ullik

Hugo Ullik was a painter of theater decorations, illustrator and landscape painter.

Hugo Ullik was the son of court clerk Jan Ullik and his wife Aloisie in Beroun. From 1854 to 1861 he studied at the Prague Academy at the Max Haushofer Landscape School. He exhibited for the first time in 1860 in Krasoumná jednota. In the early 1960s, he lived in distressing financial conditions, painted around Salzburg and applied in vain for a state scholarship. In 1864 he moved to Prague and in the same year on November 24, in the Old Town Church of St. Jakub married Maria Apollonia Freutová (* 1837 Prague), daughter of a Prague shoemaker, their marriage was childless.

In the years 1871–1874 he continued his studies at the Munich Landscape School of Eduard Schleich. Until 1877, he lived mainly in Munich and traveled to the Bavarian Alps ( In Ramsau, Ruhpolding, Evening on the Lake ), but was declared a permanent resident until his death in Prague. After returning to Bohemia, he made a living as a painter of theater decorations in Prague, Pilsen and Bratislava. As an illustrator, he contributed drawings of Czech castles to the magazines Květy and Světozor.

He was a member of the Association of St. Lukáš (50s), Krasoumné jednoty (1875–79) and Umělecké besedy (1863–1881).

He died in 1881 and was buried in the Olšany cemetery.
