Sebastián López de Arteaga, Spanish Baroque painter who trained together with Zurbarán in the 1620s , whose style he introduced in Mexico.
He arrived in America in 1640 , specifically New Spain (Mexico), where he cultivated the tenebrist style with strong chiaroscuro. He is therefore one of the most prominent painters in New Spain. He painted religious pictures such as The Marriage of the Virgin, The incredulity of Saint Thomas or The Crucified, and more than a dozen portraits of the inquisitors, as he held the honorary position of painter of the Holy Office.
