Andrej Kováčik

Andrej Kováčik was a Slovak painter, sculptor, graphic artist and illustrator. In 1908-14 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest under P. Szinyei-Merse. During World War I 1914-18 he worked as a painter in the Austro-Hungarian army. In 1919-27, artist and illustrator of the Book Printing Participation Society in Martin; 1920 co-founder of the Society of Slovak Artists in Martin.

He also worked extensively in the field of applied graphics (political and exhibition posters, mercantile prints, book covers); he is considered one of the founders of Slovak applied graphics. He illustrated reading books, schoolbooks (Fonomimický šlabikár a první čítanka, 1934), calendars and historical literature (1933-37 edition of Great Books published by L. Mazáč). His satirical drawings and cartoons were popular, which he contributed to the newspapers and magazines Kocúr (1929-45), Koza (1923-25), Jež (1922-26) and Osa (1932-33).
