Jean-François Garneray was a French artist. Born in Paris, Jean-François Garneray trained in the studio of Jacques-Louis David in Paris from 1782 and collaborated in some of his works. From 1791 to 1835, he exhibited regularly at the Salons in Paris.

Until the Revolution, he mainly painted miniatures. During the Revolution, he painted portraits of politicians, which were reproduced in engravings. At the beginning of the Restauration, Garneray created paintings in the troubadour style. Besides portraits, the artist painted history paintings and family portraits. His three sons Ambroise, Auguste-Siméon and Hippolyte were painters as well.
