Franz Dobiaschofsky

Franz Josef Dobiaschofsky was an Austrian painter.

Franz Josef Dobiaschofsky was the son of the women's clothing maker Josef Dobiaschofsky and Katharina Klara Kriechbaum. He was born in the house "Zur Alster" in the former Neudeggergrund (today Neudeggergasse 4).

From 1830 to 1841 he attended the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts, where he was a student of Joseph von Führich and Leopold Kupelwieser. In 1848 his picture Faust and Gretchen caused a sensation in the 19th century because he had portrayed Faust as a student with a black, red and gold sash and a calabrian. After the police objected, he had to paint over the picture.

In 1850/51 Dobiaschofsky was provisional professor of painting at the preparatory school of the academy.

After his death, Dobiaschofsky was buried in the Schmelzer cemetery .

In 1955 the Dobiaschofskyweg in Vienna-Altmannsdorf was named in honor of the artist.
