Son of George Sherriff (fl 1853-1876). He came to New Zealand with his father and brothers Frank and Arthur, and sister Matilda on the `Constance' in 1862. His father and brother Bedford had arrived in NZ in 1853 and purchased land at Wellington, Nelson and Wanganui from the NZ Company. His father's property at No 2 Line Wanganui was named `Rusthall' after the home at Tunbridge Wells. Active as an artist in Wanganui around the 1870s to the 1910s. George had an artist's studio in Ridgway Street, Wanganui. He designed the stone Veteran steps and lion in Wanganui. Died 25 December 1930.He exhibited at the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts (Wellington) from 1889 to 1914. According to Una Platts in 'Nineteenth century New Zealand artists' (1980) between 1883 and 1914 he exhibited with various other North Island art societies and in Australia. He was a founding member of the Wanganui Arts and Crafts Society from 1901.
