Anton Psenner studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna (1813-1816), among others with Franz Caucig. In the years 1821/22 he lived and worked in Rome, during which time he deepened his attachment to the Nazarenes (followers of Jesus).

He studied the artists of the early Renaissance, such as Da Vinci and Raphael.
