Artur Nikodem

Artur Nikodem is one of the important Artists of the interwar period in Austria and left an impressive oeuvre of characteristic Tyrolean landscapes and photographies behind.

After his schooldays in Innsbruck, Tyrol, Artur Nikodem went to Munich to study Fine Arts although his parents were against it. His teachers were Defregger und Kaulbach. He moved to Meran afterwards in 1893 where he stayed until 1908, when he moved back to Innsbruck with his family. 1920 Artur Nikodem, who has worked for the governmental postal service, retired and devoted himself entirely to painting. In following years he had big exhibitions in Austria as well as abroad but this successful period was cut short when the Nazis took over power.

During the time of the National Socialism he was expelled from different artists groups and many oh his works were confiscated or destroyed. During World War II until his death in 1940 Artur Nikodem worked in private and did no exhibit anymore.
