Michael Stohl was trained at the Art Academy in Vienna under Ludwig Ferdinand Schnorr von Carolsfeld. In the 1840s he travelled in Italy, where he painted in Rome the portrait of the Russian Grand Duchess Maria Nicolajewa, her husband the Duke of Leuchtenburg and their children. Having won the protection of the Russian imperial family, he was afterwards appointed court artist in Saint Petersburg.
