August Lucas

August Lucas was one of the most important representatives of romantic art of Darmstadt, Germany. After studying history painting in Munich with Peter Cornelius from which Lucas turned away quickly, the artist focused on the landscape, which became his main subject especially through his first stay in Italy from 1829 to 1834.

In Rome, Lucas joined the German artist colony of around Joseph Anton Koch and Johann Christian Reinhart. Many excursions together with Friedrich Preller (1830) and Wilhelm Ahlborn (1831) led the artist to Olevano and Civitella.

From the 1830s he turned more and more to the real nature subject to his drawing technique was even more precise, light his palette and colorful.
