Lilli Behrens

Lilli Behrens was a German textile artist and designer of clothing and adhesive paper. She was the wife of Peter Behrens.

Elisabeth, known as “Lilli”, was the daughter of district officer Josef Krämer. She married Peter Behrens, then a painter in the Art Nouveau movement in Munich, around 1890. Their son Josef was born there on November 7, 1890, their daughter Petra (1898-1993), who later became a fashion designer and fashion journalist, was born in 1898, and their son Heinz-Victor in 1903.

In 1894 Lilli Behrens started to present her own works as an artist and designs for carpets, cushions and similar items. Around 1900 she expanded her field of activity by making a name for herself in Darmstadt as a protagonist of women's reform clothing. She received a gold medal for this at a decorative arts exhibition in Leipzig. From 1902 she produced paste paper for bookbinding purposes. She created leaves out of paste paper in Düsseldorf in 1910, and these are now part of the collection of decorated papers at the German Museum of Books and Writing.

Behrens presented books with their endpapers at the International Exhibition of the Book Industry and Graphic Arts (BUGRA) in Leipzig in 1914.
