
Charton was born in Lyon, France, into a family of artists. He studied in Paris and traveled to Italy and Spain before embarking on a career as a painter and photographer. In 1852, he crossed the Isthmus in Panama on his way to California. He spent much of his career traveling and working in Latin America.
