A painter, illustrator and lithographer, Alcide-Joseph Lorentz was a frequent exhibitor at the Paris Salons during the 1840’s. As a painter, he gained a strong reputation for his historical art, particularly scenes involving the campaigns of Napoleon.

As a lithographic artist, however, his approach was much less formal and he contributed a number of humorous compositions to "Le Charivari", including the set entitled, "Les Plaisirs de la Chasse". "L’Arret, Habitant du Marais" was the first lithograph he created for this series. Lorentz also provided images for such publications as "L’espit follet', 'La mode' and "Le petit journal pour rire' as well as other French journals of the period.
