Henrik Backer

Hans Henrik Sartz Backer was a Norwegian painter and exhibition organizer, known to posterity for several decorative commissions. These include the large paintings with motifs from Vaterland and Grønland in Oslo, for the restaurant Olympen in 1928, Tractøren in 1929 and Rosenborg cinema in 1937. In 1920, he was the decorator for the film Kaksen på Øverland.

After the First World War, he produced a number of pictures of the old Christiania that was about to disappear. Many of these are from Pipervika, done in watercolor. Some of them are owned by Oslo Museum.

Backer received the King's Gold Medal of Merit in 1935.

Henrik Backer was the son of Johan Fredrik Backer (1839-1906) and Josefine Mathilde Thrane (1841-1886). He was married to Dagny Berntzen in 1900.
