Otto Johannes Moe

Otto Johannes Moe was a Norwegian cartoonist and illustrator who is best remembered for his Christmas card designs featuring elves.

He was active in the years 1905-1940, and his card designs included barn elves with porridge, gift elves and elves with Norwegian flag colors. He also made cards with the royal family, and city motifs in general. He also illustrated a few books.

Moe's painting “The Bazaars” (1905) is owned by Oslo Museum. It is a winter scene from the corner of Dronningensgate and Karl Johans gate, with a horse-drawn carriage, snowplow and sleigh horses. Two of his Santa motifs were used on Norwegian Christmas stamps in 1992.
