Why is this image in the public domain?
This work was commissioned by the United States federal government as part of the Works Progress Administration (WPA) program. It is not subject to copyright protection.

Under the Works Progress Administration, Cleo Sara served as the head of the innovative Poster Division of the Illinois Project for the Arts. A white artist, he created an especially strong image for the cover of the invitation to the art exhibition at the American Negro Exposition, an image which, prophetically, would be a dominant one thirty years later at the height of the American Civil Rights Movement.
