This work was commissioned by the United States federal government as part of the Works Progress Administration (WPA) program. It is not subject to copyright protection.

Born in Russia, he served as a seaman and rose to the rank of pilot before he became an artist. For twelve years he was with the Moscow Art Theatre Studio. He came to this America in 1923, and for some years thereafter was engaged in theatrical art work with the Triangle Studio.
