Jan Baegert was a painter at the time of transition from medieval to modern times. He was the son of the painter Derick Baegert and is considered one of the most important painters of his period of upheaval in the Westphalian and Lower Rhine region. Numerous commissions from these two regions point to his fame at that time. His style is still in the tradition of the late Gothic period, but already shows the influence of Renaissance painting, for example, from Flanders.
