The engraver, draughtsman and painter Conrad Martin Metz was born in Bonn between 1745 and 1749. He studied in London at the Royal Academy Schools and with the engraver (and founder Academician) Francesco Bartolozzi. Metz engraved many religious subjects after the old masters in publications such as Imitations of Drawings by Parmegiano. In 1801 he went to Rome, where he undertook his most ambitious project – a huge engraving, from fifteen plates, of Michelangelo’s Last Judgement in the Sistine Chapel.
