René-Gabriel Rabié, a member of a French family of navigators, lived in the current Haiti and in the Caribbean for a long time. During these years he worked as an architect, cartographer, and naturalist. His series of excellent illustrations of plants and animals which includes different species of butterflies prior to their official discovery and large numbers of birds, served as a detailed study of diverse birdlife for the ornithologists in the 18th and 19th centuries. About 1768 he was part of some of the expeditions to Mexico extensively documenting the life and singularities of the viceregal´s great metropolis.
