Vauthier was born in Pernambuco of French parents and came to Paris to study under Lalanne. He made his exhibiting debut at the Salon of 1874 and in 1885 became a member of the Artistes Francais. Throughout his life, he received much recognition for his work. He received an honourable mention in 1884, a third-class medal in 1887, an honourable mention at the Exposition Universelle of 1889, a second-class medal in 1895 and a silver medal at the Exposition Universelle of 1900.
