Petrus Paulus Schiedges the elder was a Dutch marine artist. He was born in The Hague, Holland and lived most of his life there. After his study at the Haagsche Teekenacademie, he developed into a painter of sea and river views. In the 1840s he received advice from marine painter Louis Meijer. Schiedges was a master at displaying the different ship types that sailed on the Dutch waters at that time. He specialised in turbulent, romantic seas and made accurate studies of the marine scenes he observed, displaying them in minute and accurate detail.
