The German artist Max Flashar is best known for his humorous genre scenes. He preferred to portray the well-to-do bourgeoisie, occasionally situated in a late-18th-century setting. Flashar was educated at the academies in Weimar, Munich and Berlin and also spent a short time in Paris for study. In addition to the aforementioned scenes, Flashar painted a number of portraits, including members of German royal houses. He was also a well-known poster designer and illustrator of the 'Fliegende Blätter', a satirical weekly in Munich.
