
Maria La Roche was a Swiss painter and illustrator.
Maria La Roche was born in Ziefen in 1870, the daughter of Emanuel La Roche. Her father was a pastor and later curator of the Basel Public Art Collection. Her brother was Emanuel La Roche. In 1871, the family moved to Basel. Maria La Roche attended the local trade school and was a private student of the painter Fritz Schider. From 1893 to 1895 she studied in Dresden under Johann Ernst Sattler and Carl Ludwig Noah Bantzer. From 1895 to 1897 she took lessons from Hans Thoma in Frankfurt am Main and became friends with his family. From 1901 to 1903 she lived in Paris. In 1904 she followed this with a stay in England.
From 1904, Marie La Roche was a member of the association of Swiss graphic artists 'Die Walze'. In 1905, she attended Walter Conz's radio school in Karlsruhe. From 1906 to 1907, she was a student of Hans Karl Eduard von Berlepsch-Valendas in Munich. From 1907 to 1914, she ran her own studio. From 1914, La Roche mostly lived in Basel. She was interrupted by a stay in Paris from 1924 to 1925 and three years in Zurich from 1927 to 1930.
She created, among other things, plant pictures, book illustrations, cityscapes, posters and bookplates.
