José María Vázquez (Mexican, 1765 - 1826)
José María Vázquez received his training as a painter in the Academy of San Carlos. He was granted a pension and later became the acting director after the death of his master Jimeno and Planes.
He emphasized his works as a portraitist and also had an important production of religious work of neoclassical style. He was in charge of making a portrait of the first ruler of Independent Mexico, the emperor Augustine de Iturbide.
