Born in 1810, Johann Anton Castell trained at the Dresden Academy under Johann Christian Dahl (1788-1857). Along with Caspar David Friedrich (1774 - 1840), Dahl became of the leading artists of the city and a point of reference for any artist who wanted to take up landscape painting.
