Hjalmar Johnssen

The Norwegian painter Hjalmar Johnssen originally worked as a sailor and shipbuilder in Oslo. He turned to painting in 1879, and specialized in maritime and port pieces.
After a brief period of study in Paris, he left in 1882 for a few months in Kragerø down, to study with Frits Thaulow. He found his motivation along the southern coast of the country.
