Henry Herman Cross

American, 1837-1918

Henry Herman Cross became a reputed painter of Indian portraits. Born in Flemingville, NY Cross traveled to Paris where he studied with animal painter Rosa Bonheur between 1853-1855. After returning to America, Cross headed West where he carried out his career as a painter.
