Giuseppe Ruoppolo, whose still lifes were praised as "truth more beautiful than nature itself," was the pupil of his uncle, Giovanni Battista Ruoppolo, whose works exhibit a similar grittiness distinct from the smoother planes and forms favored by their northern Italian counterparts.
