George Sheridan Knowles was a British painter best known for his portraits and genre scenes. Born on November 25, 1863 in Manchester, United Kingdom, Knowles received his formal training at the Manchester School of Art and the Royal Academy Schools in London. As many other Victorian artists of his day, Knowles’s paintings often depicted nostalgic scenes of earlier centuries, replete with costumed subjects, as seen in his work Autumn Melody (1908). He was a member of the Royal Society of British Artists and the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolors. The artist died on March 15, 1931 in London, United Kingdom.
