Painter and miniaturist, François Guérin trained in the studio of Charles-Joseph Natoire. He was first a member of the Académie de Saint-Luc, where he taught as an assistant professor from 1751, before being approved by the Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture in 1761 and received in 1767. Guérin then exhibited at each Salon until 1783, presenting allegorical paintings, genre scenes, or portraits, most often in small format.
