Elias Pieter van Bommel was a Dutch painter. He was best known for his romantic cityscapes.
Van Bommel studied at the Rijksacademie Amsterdam and with the landscape painter Andries Roth. He worked in the style of Romanticism. Under the influence of Roth, he initially painted mainly landscapes himself. He also made river and beach views. In the 1850s, however, he switched to finely elaborated city views, usually with a lot of bustle and liveliness, with a great sense of monumentality. Several of his works also have historical value, in particular due to the detailed way in which he depicted historic buildings and buildings.
Van Bommel painted throughout the Netherlands, including in Amsterdam, where he lived, Rotterdam, Dordrecht, Scheveningen, Vlissingen and Hoorn. He also made extensive study trips through Belgium, Germany, France, Hungary and Italy. He died in 1890 in Vienna, where he had settled at the end of his life, aged 69.
Van Bommel was the teacher of Jan David Geerling Grootveld.
