Carl von Merode came from the noble Belgian family Merode. In 1870 - 1876, he was a student at the Vienna Academy for Fine Arts, 1873 at Anselm Feuerbach. He was a member of Vienna Art Cooperative. In 1891, he was a jury at the Berlin anniversary exhibition. Together with the landscape artist Adolf Kaufmann, he founded in 1900 in Vienna a painting school for women. His work preferred market scenes and humoristic scenes from Vienna folklore. He won many awards. Carl von Merode is the father of the French ballet dancer and vaudeville Cleo de Merode.
