Follow

Capt. John Bernard Gilpin was a landscape painter whose elder son William Gilpin (1724-1804) became an early and influential theorist of the Picturesque movement. His younger son Sawrey Gilpin was an animal painter who attempted, unsuccessfully, to raise the lowly reputation of the genre. Sawrey's son William Sawrey Gilpin was a landscape watercolourist and garden designer.
