As an etcher and painter Mannfeld was a pupil of the painter Otto Georgi. One of his students was Ottilie Roederstein . He worked as a teacher and professor of etching since 1895 at the Städel in Frankfurt am Main. Since 1895 he was also director at the State College of Fine Arts - Städelschule.
