August Georg Mayer (1834-1889) was an Austrian portrait and genre painter living in Vienna and Hungary. Mayer studied at the Academy of Arts in Vienna and was a pupil of C. Gsellhofer und C. Rahl.
The artist started his career as a genre and history painter, later he focused on portraits and painted the scenes of theaters in Hungary.
As an author he published his memories of one of his teachers, titled 'Erinnerungen an C. Rahl ' (1882), which are considered to be important for art and contemporary history.
