Adolf Constantin Baumgartner-Stoiloff was a Bulgarian painter, famous for his portrayals of 19th Century Russia.
Originally born in Austria, Baumgartner-Stoiloff studied at the St. Petersburg Imperial Academy of Fine Arts in the 1880s. Here, the artist developed a reputation for being a master painter of horses. From around 1890 to the early 1900s, Baumgartner-Stoiloff's scenes of rural Russia often depicted Kossaks and hunters, and were frequently reproduced in various European magazines. The artist is known to have worked under various pseudonyms, sometimes signing his paintings with 'A. Baumgartner-Stoiloff', 'Stoiloff', 'Constantin Stoiloff' and 'C. Stoiloff'.
Today, Baumgertner-Stoiloff's works can be found in many important public institutions, galleries and collections around the world, including a large number in the important private South-African collection of George Bibikov.
